What is a Model United Nations conference?

A Model United Nations conference, often abbreviated and referred to as an MUN conference, is a simulation of the United Nations and its different bodies. Students participating in the conference take on the role of delegates from different UN member states. At a least a month before the conference takes place, students choose a country that they would like to represent. They also choose a particular committee (for example the Political and Financial Committee or the Security Council) in which they will advocate the opinions of their country.

The duty of each student – delegate is to prepare a resolution. A resolution represents the opinion and position of a country regarding a specific topic that is to be discussed in the committee. During the conference itself, delegates debate, make speeches, merge resolutions and negotiate with other countries. The aim of each delegate is that a resolution which represents their nation’s interests is voted for by the committee.
